Firefighters rescued at least 30 cats from a fire at a west suburban Lombard animal shelter Sunday night, authorities said. The fire broke out at Cat Guardians, an all-volunteer-run nonprofit along East St. Charles Road near North Westmore Avenue. A village of Lombard spokesperson said the fire was under control as of about 10 p.m. While most of the cats were believed to have been accounted for, officials had not yet determined a final number. Residents were asked to avoid the area as emergency crews continued to work at the scene. Additional details about the fire were not immediately available.
